We're Going to the Farmers' Market is by print and pattern designer Stefan Page and it represents the perfect pairing of board book format and content. As infants and toddlers, board books introduce children to the world around them, from animals to trucks to body parts. How perfect, then, to have a board book featuring what, for many lucky families, is a weekly event - going to the farmers' market! The text in Page's book is appropriately brief and rhyming and starts off, "To market, to market, we are on our way."
What I especially love about the first few pages is that they seem to be illustrated from the perspective of the intended audience, a toddler in a stroller.
After a couple of pages that detail the things bought at the farmers' market, it's home to the kitchen to make dinner!
The final page begins, "To table, to table," and shows a beautifully set table and a delicious looking meal. Of course, We're Going to the Farmers' Market teaches little readers the about food, but it also sets the stage for what hopefully will be a lifelong appreciation of farm to table foods and the sense of community that comes from knowing the people who grow your food and seeing them in person every week!
