A Library Book for Bear by Bonny Becker, illustrated by Kady MacDonald Denton

A Library Book for Bear is the newest book from Bonny Becker and Kady MacDonald Denton, creators of four other books featuring this odd but endearing couple. I reviewed the beginning readers book A Birthday For Bear back in 2009 and have been reading the Bear books at story time ever since. Maybe it's because I relate to bear, who is a homebody, stick-in-the-mud who doesn't like change. But with Mouse around, change is always in the cards.

In A Library Book for Bear, Mouse determines that it's time for a visit to the library. Bear has three books about kings and queens AND three books about honey bees and just doesn't see the need. But he grudgingly straps on his roller skates and lets Mouse coax him along, practically pushing him in the door. Once there, he refuses to look at any of the books Mouse suggests and even shushed by the librarian for being too loud. Things just don't seem to be going well at all - until the perceptive librarian finds a way to coax Bear into a chair in the story time circle where he gleefully discovers she is reading a story about a brave bear and a treasure of pickles!

Kids will love the crotchety Bear and the cheerfully persistent Mouse and hopefully Becker and Denton have more adventures in their future!
