The Family Bedtime Treasury: Tales of Sleepy Times and Sweet Dreams

Last year as the holiday season approached I was thrilled to see The Family Storybook Treasury: Tales of Laughter, Curiosity and Fun published by Houghton Mifflin. For the cost of a single picture book, this collection includes eight classic picture books (Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed, Tacky the Penguin as well as a Curious George and Lyle Crocodile story) interspersed with poems. The illustrations are true to the originals and the volume comes with a bonus audio CD. A collection like this is essential for any family vacation or even any kind of outing that involves a waiting room. This year Houghton Mifflin is back with a new treasury that I like even more than the first! The Family Bedtime Treasury is another collection of eight fantastic bedtime stories and poems as well as a CD of classical music that is perfect for bedtime. Below is a list of covers from the stories included in this collection. In my opinion, it's worth the cost to own Caldecott Honor winner The Napping House by Don and Audrey Wood and The Quiet Book by Deborah Underwood and Renata Liwska alone!

BPP definitely achieves this with every book they publish and, if you are a book lover, you will want to seek out all their titles. While I wrote an article titled Reading Levels: How I Assign Reading Levels to Books, How the Publishers Do It and How You Can Help Your Reader Find the Right Book at the Right Time that discusses how reading levels are determined by professionals and amateurs like myself, there is more on this subject to discuss. Determining the reading level of a book from the children's section is never easy, mostly because there are several different standardized methods of determining reading levels. Add to this the fact that knowing their children's reading level is most often the only tool a parent is armed with when exploring the bookstore, library, website, etc, and the job becomes even more difficult.
